The short answer

Choose the location before you choose the hotel

La Paz is a city on a bay, not a conventional beach-resort town. Hotels on the Malecón put you close to restaurants and the boat operators for whale sharks and Espíritu Santo, but the city waterfront is a promenade rather than a hotel beach. Balandra and Tecolote sit north of town.

Stay on the Malecón if your trip revolves around food and boat days. Choose Puerta Cortés if you want resort amenities. Choose the northern beach strip if swimming from the property matters more than walking to dinner.

Where to stay

Three areas, three different trips

The location changes whether you need a car, how quickly you reach boat departures and whether the beach is part of the hotel itself.

Zone 1 · In town

Malecón & Centro

Best restaurants, best walkability and the easiest base for whale-shark and Espíritu Santo departures. The waterfront is for sunsets, not hotel swimming.

WalkableNo car neededBoat days
Zone 2 · Marina

Puerta Cortés

A resort-style development with marina, golf, beach-club access and more self-contained amenities than the city center.

ResortMarinaCar useful
Zone 3 · North coast

Northern beach strip

Smaller beachfront stays toward La Concha, El Coromuel and the road to Balandra. Better for swimming; weaker for walkability.

Hotel details

The tradeoffs that actually matter

Each recommendation explains why you would choose it, what you give up and where to check availability or compare prices.

Best for whale sharks and island trips

Baja Club Hotel

Paseo Álvaro Obregón 265 · on the Malecón · Member of Design Hotels

A 1910 colonial villa restored by Grupo Habita and joined to a modern four-storey extension, with 32 rooms arranged around a walled courtyard, a pool and a rooftop bar facing the bay.

Its real advantage is positional. You are on the Malecón itself, so restaurants are a one- to three-minute walk and most whale-shark and Espíritu Santo operators are close enough that an early departure does not need a taxi.

Best for a resort holiday

Hotel Indigo La Paz Puerta Cortés

Inside Puerta Cortés · north of the city · IHG

The only property on this list that functions as a full resort: 115 rooms, marina access, beach clubs, spa, infinity pool, restaurants and golf inside the Puerta Cortés development.

Choose it if you want to swim, golf and eat without leaving the property or if you are chartering from Marina CostaBaja.

Best for swimming from your hotel

La Posada Hotel & Beach Club

La Posada Beach · north of the center

A small beachfront boutique property with a pool, garden and private parking, sitting directly on the sand rather than across a road from it.

The tradeoff is isolation: you are off the restaurant grid, so plan on driving or taxiing for dinner.

Best adults-only in the old town

Casa 1880

Centro Histórico · short walk from the Malecón

A restored historic house turned adults-only boutique stay, built around a leafy courtyard with a small outdoor pool, shared lounge and terrace.

The appeal is quiet without isolation: courtyard calm while still reaching restaurants and tour check-ins on foot.

Best value walkable base

Hotel Catedral La Paz

Centro Histórico · near the cathedral

A dependable mid-range hotel in the historic center with an outdoor pool and sun terrace, a bar and breakfast included.

For a first trip where most of the budget goes on boat tours rather than the room, this is the sensible default.

Best boutique beach-strip alternative

Orchid House Baja

Near La Concha · north of the center

A smaller design-forward stay near La Concha that suits travelers who want beach access and a quieter atmosphere without committing to a full resort setup.

It is a better fit for laid-back couples than for travelers who want to walk to the Malecón every evening.

Best adults-only value near Centro

República Pagana

Centro · inland from the waterfront

An adults-only option that works for travelers who want a quieter local base and do not mind being off the immediate waterfront strip.

It makes the most sense if price and atmosphere matter more than direct Malecón access.

Best chain stay for predictability

Courtyard by Marriott La Paz

Near the marina side of town

A straightforward chain-hotel choice for travelers who value familiar standards, loyalty points and a more predictable room setup over boutique character.

It is practical rather than atmospheric and works best if you are already planning to drive.

Best budget walkable base

Seven Crown Centro Histórico

Centro Histórico · walkable to the waterfront

A simple central hotel for travelers who want the lowest-cost practical base while staying within walking distance of the Malecón and the historic center.

If you plan to spend most of the day out on tours and only need a clean, central base, it can work well.

Things to do

What is actually worth booking in La Paz

These are the experiences most likely to shape your hotel choice and your itinerary.

Best full-day experience

Espíritu Santo & Los Islotes

Protected islands, clear water, wildlife, snorkeling and beach stops. Current traveler reviews repeatedly praise knowledgeable guides and small-group logistics.

Current signal: Espíritu Santo is around 4.9/5 from roughly 1,880 Tripadvisor reviews. Sea-lion swimming at Los Islotes is restricted June 1–August 31.

Best beach day

Balandra Beach

Shallow turquoise coves, calm-water swimming and an easy viewpoint hike. It is protected and capacity-controlled, so it needs more planning than a normal beach stop.

Current signal: Balandra is around 4.7/5 from 3,000+ Tripadvisor reviews. Local tourism guidance lists two daily access blocks with capacity limits.

Seasonal wildlife

Whale shark snorkeling

When the season is open, this is one of the clearest reasons to choose La Paz over a conventional Baja resort.

Confirmed season: local tourism guidance lists October–April. Sightings and operations remain nature-dependent.

Best free evening

Walk the Malecón at sunset

Bay views, public sculptures, restaurants and an easy evening walk once the heat drops.

Current signal: the La Paz Malecón is around 4.6/5 from roughly 1,890 Tripadvisor reviews.

Best food-focused activity

Take a street-food tour

A useful first-night activity if you stay in Centro or near the Malecón: dinner, local context and an orientation walk in one.

Current signal: current La Paz food tours show strong recent traveler feedback for guides, organization and food stops.

Flexible beach backup

Tecolote Beach

A practical complement to Balandra because it has food and water-activity services and does not require the same protected-area time-slot planning.

Current signal: more than 800 Tripadvisor reviews, with recent feedback continuing to praise the beach-day experience.

Before you choose dates

Two seasonal details that can change the trip

Whale sharks: October to April, but nature decides the exact operating days

Whale sharks gather in the Bay of La Paz through the cooler months, and swims are regulated rather than run freely. Local tourism guidance lists the official season as October to April, but tours can be delayed or suspended when conditions or shark counts do not meet operating requirements. If this is the reason you are going, build in a spare day.

Balandra: protected access rather than a casual beach stop

Balandra is a federally protected area about 25 minutes north of downtown. Entry uses controlled time windows and capacity limits, so check the official access information before travel. There is limited infrastructure inside; a car or organized tour is usually the simplest way to plan it.

Rules, fees and operating windows can change. Confirm them with the responsible local or federal authority before travel.

FAQ

Questions people ask before booking La Paz

Does La Paz have a beach you can swim at?
Not in the city center. The Malecón is a seafront promenade. Swimmable beaches run north along the coast road, including El Coromuel, La Concha, Tecolote and Balandra. If swimming from your hotel matters, choose the northern beach strip or Puerta Cortés.
Do I need a rental car in La Paz?
It depends on where you stay. On the Malecón or in Centro Histórico you can walk to restaurants and many tour check-ins. At Puerta Cortés or on the beach strip a car becomes much more useful. It also simplifies Balandra and Tecolote.
Is La Paz better than Cabo?
They are different trips. Cabo is stronger for large resorts and nightlife. La Paz is stronger for marine wildlife, Espíritu Santo, Balandra and a more local city feel. They are close enough to combine by road.
When is the best time to visit La Paz?
November through April combines comfortable weather with whale-shark season. December through March is a particularly useful window if wildlife is central to the trip.
Which airport do I fly into?
Manuel Márquez de León International (LAP) is the local airport. Some travelers also fly into Los Cabos (SJD) and drive north, especially when fares or schedules are better.
